Welding & Rust Repair in Dundalk
Chassis, sill and underbody welding for Dundalk drivers. We sort structural rust properly, new steel welded in, not filler, and get you through the NCT.
Dundalk is our home patch. The workshop is in Ardaghy, Omeath, about 20 minutes up the coast, and a large share of the cars, vans and 4x4s we work on come from Dundalk and the surrounding A91 area. If your car has failed the NCT on corrosion, or you can see rust starting on the sills or underbody, we will give you a straight assessment and a fair price.
We are not a general garage that does a bit of welding on the side. Structural metalwork is what we do every day: chassis rails, sills, floor pans, crossmembers and rust repair on everything from family cars to working vans and farm vehicles. No filler over structural rust, and no temporary patches that come back in six months.
The NCT and your car in Dundalk
The Dundalk NCT centre is on the Coes Road Industrial Estate. During the test your car goes up on a lift and the underbody is checked, including the chassis, sills, suspension and brake line mountings, and the floor structure. Corrosion in those areas is one of the reasons cars fail.
When structural corrosion is bad enough to affect the integrity of the car, it is graded as a Dangerous fail, which means you are not supposed to drive the car away from the centre. The good news is that a proper welded repair, done in new steel of the same gauge and left visible for inspection, will pass a retest. We do this kind of pre-NCT and post-fail repair work constantly.
Why Dundalk cars rust
Co. Louth gets around 947mm of rain a year and the roads are salted right through the winter, particularly the M1 and N1 that so many Dundalk cars sit on every day. Salt and damp are what drive underbody corrosion, and once it gets under the underseal it spreads where you cannot see it.
- Inner and outer sills, especially on cars over about ten years old
- Floor pans and the structure around jacking points
- Chassis rails, outriggers and crossmembers
- Suspension and subframe mounting points
- Wheel arches and the metal behind them
Cars, vans and working vehicles
Plenty of our Dundalk work is on commercial vehicles. Vans and jeeps face the annual CVRT, the test many people still call the DoE, and underbody corrosion is a common cause of failure. We sort van floors, sills and chassis before test day so you are not caught out. Farm vehicles and trailers are core work too, which matters in a county with as much agricultural traffic as Louth.
The easiest way to get a price is to send a few photos of the underside on WhatsApp, or drive the car up to Omeath for a proper look. We will tell you straight what is there and what it takes to fix it.

Do I have to bring my car to Omeath, or do you cover Dundalk?
Our workshop is in Omeath, about 20 minutes from Dundalk, and that is where the welding is done. Most Dundalk customers drive the car up or send photos on WhatsApp first so we can give a price before they make the trip.
I have an NCT coming up in Dundalk. How soon should I get welding done?
Sooner is better. If you already know there is rust, get it assessed before the test rather than paying for a fail and a retest. A straightforward repair is often a one-day job, so there is usually time to sort it before test day if you are not leaving it to the last minute.
My car failed the Dundalk NCT on corrosion. Can you fix it for the retest?
Yes, this is one of the most common jobs we do. We repair the structural corrosion properly in new steel, leave it visible for the tester to inspect, and you take it back for the retest. We will tell you honestly at assessment whether it is worth repairing.
How much will it cost?
It depends entirely on how far the rot has spread. A single section is at the lower end; extensive multi-area work costs more. We do not quote blind. Send photos on WhatsApp or bring the car in and you will get a straight price.
